This FREE fieldtrip is a chance to tour two local decades-old working letterpress shops and learn more about the machines and processes beyond what we offer at Green Pea. This tour is offered in conjunction with our Intro to Letterpress class, but is open to anyone interested!
12:45pm- Meet at Green Pea Press studio if you'd like to caravan
1:00pm- Frost Printing Co. (on Putman Drive, off of University Dr. & Jordan Ln.)
2:00pm- Bill Axenroth's printshop, Solatec, at Lincoln Mill
Frost Printing Co. is a 3rd-generation print shop with the only working linotype machine in North Alabama. The linotype is a remarkable (Rube Goldberg-esque) machine that Ronnie Frost will demonstrate while explaining the process and history, as well as two Heidelberg windmills, a small platen press, and a large offset press. It's always interesting and incredibly informative!
Bill Axenroth is the instructor of our Intro to Letterpress class, and a 3rd-generation printer. He will demonstrate building a die, die cutting, larger-scale foil stamping, and a variety of presses. He is a wealth of information, with an entertaining delivery!
